Useful Information

WHAT TO TAKE

You will need to take a few essential items when undertaking a Training course, although it is advisable to check with your chosen MLA Member as some of items below may be supplied or included as part of your booking:-
  • A warm sleeping bag and pillow.
  • Waterproofs/Foul weather clothing.
  • Wellington/Sailing boots.
  • Soft comfortable shoes e.g. deck shoes, trainers, plimsolls – no black soles.
  • Warm clothes, whatever the season. Lots of layers are better than one thick sweater.
  • Hat, sunglasses & suncream.  Sun rays and wind are just as harmful as heat!
  • Hat, scarf & gloves, for those chillier days.
  • Swimming costume, for those possible breaks on warmer days.
  • Toiletries & towel.
  • A small torch for personal use.
  • Any personal medication.

It is important that your belongings are packed in a soft foldable bag, not a suitcase, as storage on board can be limited.

DOCUMENTATION

The essentials, depending on your chosen destination, could be passport, visa, medical insurance and cancellation insurance. Did you know that you can claim back most of your treatment and medication costs if you fall ill or have an accident in Europe? That's as long as you carry a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). From 1 January 2006 the E111 form has been replaced by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) so if you are a UK resident, you can apply for an EHIC click here.  The EHIC entitles the holder to free or reduced cost, state-provided medical treatment if you fall ill or have an accident while visiting any country in the European Economic Area (EEA). Please note that an EHIC is not a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance.  MLA members can advise and assist you with purchasing travel insurance to cover your sailing activity.

A log book is used to record your RYA completed courses, sailing experience and mileage.  You can enter the RYA programme at any level, provided that you have the correct level of experience beforehand and you can discuss your requirements with your chosen MLA Member before booking your course.  If you already hold a Log Book do remember to take this with you.

YOUR WELL-BEING

You will be obliged to disclose any complaints or ailments, which are likely to affect your physical welfare during the course, and you will need to inform your skipper of any medication you are taking. You might be asked to complete a declaration regarding your health. All courses that are taken on the water will ideally require you to be able to swim although non-swimmers can be accommodated and all that is asked is that you inform your provider. If provisioning is included in your booking, please remember to state if you have any special dietary requirements.

WHEN YOU GET THERE

You will be greeted and given a briefing regarding safety & emergency procedures. Ship papers will be readily available for all vessels together with contingency plans to cover all events. The skipper’s decision is final as he/she is responsible for your safety when you are on board.

Please Note:- What is included in your booking will vary from company to company. It is essential to ask for exact details of what your payment covers.
